This page is dedicated to one of the most well know of all American car manufacturers Chevrolet, you either love them or hate them, either way you can't ignore them! first up in our twinset of modified madness we have Ray Comers Camaro - slightly modified Chevy Belair The car is a 1962 Chevy Bel Air 4dr sedan, I originally bought it about 2years ago but after a couple of trips out it started to overheat badly with signs of oil/water mix. after attempting to have the 4.7L six fixed, I decided to bite the bullet and swap it for a 350 Small Block. I bought the Goodwrench GM crate motor from American Car Company in Southend as I'd heard good things about them, and would recommend them as a good source of parts. After looking for an adapter for the existing Cast Iron Powerglide box, I took advice from some guys in the states via the net and AmericanV8 and decided to replace the box with a TH350. The swap has been fairly straightforward with my largest problems being lack of bolts supplied with additional parts to fit the engine!!!! The actual engine/box fitment took Vic and I 45 minutes!
The majority of the shiny bits to be seen are from Reality hot rods up in Scotland somewhere, these are also guys I can heartily recommend as being very helpful to a first timer / non hot rodder! (the Bel Air is a low rider complete with 4 pumps and 8! batteries)
1962 Belair 4Dr Sedan, originally bought from Grimsby I soon found that the engine was shot and decided to replace it with a Goodwrench crate motor (as on the original page)... After bare metalling the body, I took the car to NRC in Nuneaton who straightened the panels and painted the car in House of Kolor Kandy Cobalt blue over a blue base incorporating some designs I laid out on printed pictures of a similar car from the net. the patterns are painted under the Kandy in Blue, Silver, Purple, Orange and black, with the Translucent Kandy giving everything a blue tint. the roof was covered in House of Kolor silver mini flake over a silver base as was the trunk panel.
The most difficult part of the project was obtaining the missing or damaged trim parts as the Impala from this year is a more often restored machine meaning that parts for the Bel Air are harder to find. However Danny Howell owner of Late great Chevy's in Orlando Florida got on the case and managed to provide all of the necessary parts either as reproduction, second hand or NOS. The cars first outing was to Daventry on a test run where we had a transmission hose come off. this fried the transmission due to the lack of fluid, however J. Rawle Transmissions of Northfield Birmingham came through again with a speedy repair so that we could attend our first show at the Hertfordshire showground (NSRA Nationals) where the car although not finished was well received with many favourable comments on the colour.
Jobs remaining are mainly small ones although a full set of urethane
bushes will be fitted over winter in preparation for us attending some
shows in Europe next year |
